Homework Philosophy
Sojourner Elementary Homework Philosophy
It is our belief that the education of a child extends beyond the school day, and should be apart of a child’s home as well as school life. We aspire to equal importance in the growth of the mind, body and heart of each child at Sojourner. We seek to help each child identify personal strengths and challenges so that he/she will gain a strong understanding of self and use that knowledge to benefit the community. We take these things strongly into consideration, as we create extended learning opportunities for our Sojourner students.
Research on homework indicates that it should be approached not as an afterthought to the school day, but as a focused strategy for increasing understanding. Current research and the philosophy and priorities of Sojourner staff guide us in the creation of the following guidelines for the distribution of homework to our students:
Extended Learning Opportunities (Homework/Practice) will:
- Provide opportunity to prepare, complete and/or practice classroom work.
- Span the multiple intelligence areas.
- Be developmentally appropriate.
- Provide an element of choice for each student.
- Be authentic.
- Be supported by our families.
- Provide opportunities for independence.
- Reflect and expand upon classroom/school learning.
- Provide a two-way connection between school and families.
- Be accessible to EACH student.
- Be reflective and thoughtful.
- Provide balance and extended learning beyond the school day.
